Nigerian EFCC Investigator Abba Sambo Discusses Financially Motivated Sextortion

Abba Sambo, advanced fee fraud section supervisor for Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, discusses a financially motivated sextortion operation in Nigeria. The joint international operation targeted suspects whose crimes occurred in at least three countries and led to multiple deaths by suicides, including more than 20 in the U.S. since 2021.

The common perception is that because they don't actually see the suffering of the victim, they tend to see it as a game, as if the acts that they commit do not result in some negative impact on the lives of other people.

When people get to see for real … this negative impact, it tends to dissuade them from taking part in these activities. And as well, when we arrest these suspects and convict them, after the trial when we put this information across to the society it lets people know that crime does not pay. So that in itself creates deterrence.

And with this public awareness campaign that is ongoing, once message gets across, it will send the signal to the youth that this type of crime will not be condoned and whoever commits it will pay for it.
