Kevin Mulroney, detective leading senior constable, Australian Federal Police, discusses a financially motivated sextortion operation in Nigeria. The joint international operation targeted suspects whose crimes occurred in at least three countries and led to multiple deaths by suicides, including more than 20 in the U.S. since 2021.

So this crime threat and other crime types as well, we have a lot of issues with jurisdiction. And so as soon as the offenses or the offenders are in a different country, we have great difficulties. But as we move on and as we develop, and certainly in this case, we work very closely with our allies in the U.S. and in Canada and now in Nigeria. And borders are becoming less of an issue. So these cross jurisdictional operations that we're doing and these co-ops—cooperation activities—are working wonders for tackling these international crimes.
And what we saw was that every country was being affected in the exact same way as what we were. So the crime—the typology we call it—which is just the way the offenses are committed, were identical almost. And so that allowed us to open doorways between countries and build relationships to basically say that let's meet again, let's talk about what's happening with you, let's talk about how we can address it. And then everybody had a say in how this operation was going to occur.
We will follow these investigations to the end and they will be identified and that will be arrested. So they need to consider the consequences of their actions and just leave our kids alone.
The first thing I would say to the victims of these crimes is don't be afraid to approach family or even us. You're a victim. You're not by any way an offender. We will treat you like a victim. We will give you the respect you need and we will follow the information and the investigation as far as we can.
I think they really need to know that they're not alone. So we receive what we estimate to probably be between 10 and 15% of sextortion cases in Australia. It's really hard to get a tangible count on that. But we're still getting 300 a month. So they need to know that this isn't just happening to them. It's happening to children all over Australia, all over the world. So they're not alone and it's not the end of the world.
